Statutory holidays in Canada (2025–2026)

Canada has no single national list of statutory holidays. There are federally regulated holidays that apply to banks, telecoms, and interprovincial transportation, and each province and territory adds its own. Below is the full 2025 and 2026 calendar, plus which jurisdictions observe each day as a paid stat.

How many stat holidays does each province have?

  • Federal — 11 paid holidays.
  • Alberta — 9 general holidays.
  • British Columbia — 10 stat holidays (adds Truth and Reconciliation).
  • Saskatchewan — 10 public holidays.
  • Manitoba — 8 general holidays (Remembrance Day handled separately).
  • Ontario — 9 public holidays.
  • Quebec — 8 statutory holidays.
  • New Brunswick — 8 paid holidays.
  • Nova Scotia — 6 paid holidays.
  • Prince Edward Island — 7 paid holidays.
  • Newfoundland and Labrador — 6 paid holidays plus optional days.
  • Yukon — 10 stat holidays.
  • Northwest Territories — 10 stat holidays.
  • Nunavut — 10 stat holidays (adds Nunavut Day).

Who qualifies for statutory holiday pay?

Most provinces use a variation of the same test: the employee must have been employed for a minimum number of days (often 30) before the holiday and must work their scheduled shift before and after the holiday. Ontario dropped the pre/post-shift rule in 2018 — every eligible employee gets stat pay regardless of attendance around the holiday. Alberta requires 30 days of employment in the 12 months before the holiday and that the day would normally be a workday.

How stat holiday pay is calculated

  • Ontario: total regular wages + vacation pay earned in the 4 work weeks before the holiday, divided by 20.
  • Alberta: 5% of wages, general holiday pay, and vacation pay earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday (average daily wage).
  • British Columbia: total wages in the 30 calendar days before the holiday, divided by the number of days worked.
  • Quebec: 1/20th of wages earned in the 4 weeks before the holiday (excluding overtime).
  • Federal: 1/20th of wages earned in the 4 weeks before the week of the holiday.

If the employee works the holiday

In most provinces the employee gets stat holiday pay plus premium pay for the hours worked — typically 1.5× the regular rate. Ontario lets the employer and employee agree in writing to either premium pay + stat pay, or regular pay + a substitute day off with stat pay. Retail and continuous-operation employers have additional rules.
